Interview With Tim Seeley

cassie-hack-hack-slash-suicide-girlsTim Seeley is the creator of the hit comic Hack/Slash. His creation also happens to be getting turned into a major motion picture from Rogue Pictures. Fortunately we were able to get a hold of this comics superstar and get him to answer a few questions!

FilmSnobbery: I know you’re a big fan of slasher movies. What movies influenced Hack/Slash?

Tim Seeley: Heh, well, in some way, EVERY slasher movie I’ve seen influenced Hack/Slash. But, I think, most specifically, HALLOWEEN. FRIDAY the 13TH parts 1, 6 and 10, TRICK OR TREAT and SCREAM.

FS: How well do you feel Hack/Slash will translate to film?

TS: I think everything is their to be a great slasher movie…I guess it’ll depend on what direction the filmamkers go. Honeslty, I can’t imagine it working very well if it’s played TOO seriously.

FS: How has the whole Hollywood process treated you so far?

TS: It started out lik a total dream! I was friends with the director, I was involved in the process…it as awsome. Now, it’s become very much like any othe standard Hollywood expereince. I get a check, I shut up, they make a movie.

FS: How much influence did you have over what went in the script and what stayed out?

TS: In the beginning, I had a lot, or at least, the illusion of a lot. But as time has gone on, it’s clear Relativity-Rogue is going to make their version of the film, wiothout any interest in what I think works. That is, of course, their perogative. It is their movie afterall.

FS: It sounds like the storyline will roughly follow Hack/Slash: First Cut, with some additions. Next to First Cut, what Hack/Slash plot would you love to see in film?

TS: If I had my way, SHOUT AT THE DEVIL would be Hack/Slash 2, with the whole evil rock band. Elvis and the talking dog. How awesome would THAT be!?

FS: One of the neatest things about Hack/Slash as a comic book is that it lampoons many of the stereotypical elements of the B-movie horror flick, but director Todd Lincoln has said that this movie will be taking itself very seriously. How will that effect the story?

TS: Again, these things change so often in Hollywood, I son;t even know anymore.

FS: On the same note, my favorite element of Hack/Slash is the comedy–Cassie Hack’s smart mouth and Vlad’s sometimes off-the-mark attempts at humor. Will that be staying in the movie?

TS: I hope so. To me, horror movies are best when they straddle that line. SAW and it’s ilk, to me, are not fun to watch, since they’re so serous and can never laugh at themselves.

FS: Movies based on comic books have been especially popular lately. This year we had Watchmen, which got criticized for following its source material too closely, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which threw the majority of its source material out the window. On which side of this spectrum do you think the Hack/Slash movie will land? Where do you think comic book movies in general should land?

TS: I think each film has to be it’s own entity. SO, in some cases, there’s very little reason to stary far from the source, whereas some films need to make certain concessions to work as a film. I loved Watchmen, but even I thought it could have had more of it’s own identity as a movie. I really don;t know where H/S will fall. I’d like it to be loyal but not slave I guess.

FS: How do you think hard-core Hack/Slash fans will feel about this movie?

TS: I don’t know yet. Probably the standard 50-50 split of love and hate that any comic film gets. :)

FS: There’s very little information out there on this film. Is there anything you can tell us that won’t get you in trouble?

TS: Ha. Nope. At this point, you guys know about as much as I do. I think people have a tendancy to think comic creators know more about Hollywood than they do. I just try to make he comic, and occasionally get an email or an update about a day before the rest of the world. :)

FS: What other projects are you currently working on?

TS: I just did some Jennifer’s Body pages for BOOM! as well as a project for Marvel and a few other Top Secret projects. I’m keeping busy, and I ‘ve got Hack/Slsh planned out and ready for a whole bunch of issues, which is exciting to me. I hope you guys like what’s coming up!
