The Milford Twin Drive In began its life in 1958 when several area people and laborers built the theater hoping to cash in on the drive in “craze” of the 50s. It was opened with a single 84 foot wooden frame screen, a concession, projection room, and restroom mixture building, a playground and the box office. However, the interest in drive in theaters had waned and by the 60s the theater was sold.
Ownership changed hands again when the Scharmett family bought the property in 1969 from the original owners. The Scharmetts quickly set about modernizing and upgrading the drive in by completely renovating the concession area and restrooms, replacing the wooden frame screen with a steel one, building a new marquee and box office, and paving the entrance road. The Milford is also the first drive in located in New Hampshire to provide AM FM stereo sound through your car radio.
To celebrate the theater’s 15th anniversary in 1984, a second screen was added along with a new projection room built above the original structure. The projection equipment was modernized and the Scharmetts continue upgrading to bestow the best to their customers. Admission for your first run double feature is only $20 per car. They are open seasonally from April through September. You can find your usual drive in menu packed with treats and goodies for sale. Milford is located in southern New Hampshire and is only an hour away from Boston, so stop by before the summer is over!
