I don't understand why morality is even being included in the bill. Do we purposely want to shoot ourselves in the foot? SoCal is doing the same to its filming industry with obscene taxes and permit costs which is why people are flocking to Canada or other parts of the States.

Whenever a law makes it difficult to do business in a state, people won't jump through hoops to accommodate, they'll just go somewhere else. FL is not so unique that another place couldn't fill in for it. Hell, Scarface was filmed mostly in CA because of the dumbass Cuban community kicking up a fuss. [disclaimer: I'm Cuban and think my peeps can be dumbasses from time to time]

Living in Miami I tend to forget how "Southern" FL can be. If you were down in SoFla, its a melting pot of culture and sexuality which is much more tolerant than the rest of the state. Hopefully these changes don't go through and someone smacks some sense into that senator.

The fact that filmmakers *IN* Florida may suffer repercussions from the industry because of this makes me ill. I support my fellow Florida filmmakers and having out-of-state production companies come to film in Florida 110%! Our Film Book is FILLED with talented people and businesses who have to commute elsewhere for work because of the lack of work in their backyard. If your average person only knew how many 'Hollywood' folks in the industry call Florida (Central Florida, South Florida) home... they'd be completely SHOCKED. From what I understand, some language in the bill still needs to be clarified. And while most things are up for interpretation, the law should not be. As a Florida filmmaker and member of the human race (with some people in the biz it doesn't go without saying), I do not in any way support discrimination or intolerance. I hope this is addressed and remedied quickly. For ALL our sakes.

What I liked most about your review is that you cover the artistic elements of the film, giving budding indie filmmakers something to aspire to with a small budget and a big vision.
John Paul Rice, one of the producers on this film, was an extraordinary special guest speaker at my last workshop where he gave us such great information about the marketing and distribution of One Hour Fantasy Girl.
Thanks for the great review and for the space you take up in this digital world!

All my best,
Roberta Munroe

Thing is, I'm a HUGE Izzard fan. Like you, though, I just don't feel he fit well as an awards host. For obvious reasons, I'm rooting for the Spirit Awards to gain a large mainstream acceptance. Pretty sure this year didn't help with that at all.

We were totally disappointed by Eddie Izzard's hosting stint on the Spirit Awards. We love him and will continue to watch everything he does (and stalk him to the point of restraining orders), but he just wasn't a good fit...unlike Ben Stiller, who was awkwardly (and hilariously) truthful when presenting the final award. Next year's IFC programmers, take note!

[...] http://filmsnobbery.com/2010/03/07/izzard-host-fail/The bar for entry for awards hosts these days has been set pretty low by MTV’s Russell Brand. At Friday’s IFC Independent Spirit Awards, host Eddie Izzard would have had to move downhill to reach that floor, and instead he fell through it. … If the Video Music Awards caught flap for Brand’s jokes about the Jonas’ purity rings, Izzard’s continued denial of the existence of God during the presentation seems a dubious choice of topic for a show that’s deliberately … [...]

Excellent review of the Hive Mind.
I found it to be a very insightful movie, well produced. Greg Trent's portayal of of the Trench was so good, that even though it got a little long in spots, he kept you hooked till the end.
Everyone needs to see this one.

Thanks for letting me know. You're lucky. I missed the film when it played at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, CA due to a family illness. It's the only Jeremy Renner film I haven't seen and I can't wait to see it.

Would you happen to know when the film is going to be released? I promise it won't take me forever to comeback and find out the answer if you know. ;)

Kim

P.S.

My friend used to live in Provincetown and she used to worked at the Somerset House Inn.

Fantastic interview! I love the long format so you guys can really learn a lot about the guest, and the interviewers are very knowledgeable.

I played Juanita Ruiz in "One-Eyed Horse"/"Come Hell or High Water" and working with Wayne and his crew was a delight and inspiration. I so admire Wayne's energy, intelligence and "Can do" attitude!

Thanks for this in-depth interview!

Enjoyed the interview !! I was lucky enough to be a bad-guy extra on OEH and consider it one of the highlights of my life. My wife also appeared so we both have treasured memories of that day in 2007!

I saw this documentary at Idaho International Film Festival and I highly recommend this as required viewing. I currently have a film going through the festival circuit and this doc shows that we are not in this alone. The film is funny and sincere and frustrating at the same time. See for yourself.

Many secular films have some good and useful religious content e.g.
Lord of the Rings trilogy majoring on self-sacrifice, mercy, compassion
etc. LOTR 1,2,3 should be Nos. 54,55,56 in an expanded list.

My favorite religious film of all time is Babette's Feast.

This is a classic in critiquing the nature of community, self-giving love, and the element of surprise in the transforming nature of the Gospel in a artistic and captivating presentation. Many theologians I know use it in their classrooms.

Dogma was a terrible, unfunny, boring and non-comprehensible film (_Saved!_ was much better). A better choice for irreverent comedies that touch upon religion would have been _Harold and Maude_. I would have also included _Magnolia_ and _Kung Fu Hustle_. I liked your inclusion for _Ordet_, but that film belongs in the Top 10. Also, the nuns in _Black Narcissus_ are ANGLICAN, not Catholic... but you should have also included Powell & Pressburger's exquisite _A Matter of Life and Death_ as well.

That said, I'm much relieved you left off _Last Temptation of Christ_--another terrible movie. It's _Star Trek V_ bad.

King is a Fink,

Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed it. The pace is methodical and whether you think it's too slow is always a matter of taste in my mind. What I did mention in other writings about the film and not this review was that it was the kind of film that took a while to fully form an opinion on. It lived with me for a while and like a coil slowly unwinding itself and got better the more I thought of it.

Yes, as far as Hoult is concerned that is where most will know him from. Having seen him in various other things like "Wah-Wah,""The Weather Man" and most recently the series "Skins" I knew how well he was transitioning to adult parts and was not taken aback at all by his considerable talent. Those who didn't get on the "Skins" bandwagon will likely get to know him in the upcoming "Clash of the Titans."

Very nice. We're really looking forward to seeing this. Have heard a lot about how Tom Ford's background as a fashion designer informed the look of the sets, costumes, make-up, etc. Some have found the pacing to be too slow and the tragedy to be too subtle. Knowing what the story includes, I imagine this film holds a restrained torment in the vein of the Vanessa Redgrave segment of "If These Walls Could Talk 2," with a stark contrast between the need to grieve and the need to hide. We'll have to weigh in after we see it.

It's worth noting that Nicholas Hoult was the little boy opposite Hugh Grant in "About a Boy." So interested to see him in this very grown-up role.

Nothing says Catholic quite like a good game of bingo and nothing says bingo quite Bingo Confidential (http://www.bingoconfidential.com) - I mean seeing a nun handle a thighmaster is quite a religious experience! But I would also include The Trouble with Angles and Sister Act. Even God has a sense of humor.

This list brings back a lot of cool remembrances, and I was knocked out when you added The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob (a pedal to the metal riot) and another will join the genre of wierd kinkoid new age dramas when our extremely unusual movieTHE APOCALYPSE ACCORDING TO DORIS is delivered around March 2010 Thanks again Film Snobbery for keeping the slate alive!

Maybe it's because I'm an ex-Catholic Christian, but I'm struggling to see how "The Mission" was left off this list, Snobber. I also enjoyed "Black Robe", if mostly for the cinematography.

I was sorry that "The Mission" was not included on this list. The film is fantastically moving, IMHO, and addresses several socio-religious issues. DeNiro and Irons are fantastic, and Morricone's score alone should be enough to get it on this list.

Nic thanks very much for the review and the publicity - I appreciate it.
Sheri - thanks for the comment!

So the "New 50/50" is meant as a guidepost, not a hard and fast rule - its designed to catch people's attention and change people's mindsets - that filmmakers need to take on some responsibility for the getting their film in front of an audience. This takes time and money. The further intention is so that filmmakers plan for this and begin the process as early as possible. Beginning early will save filmmakers a lot of grief - and will ultimately save them time and money.

I also say that if filmmakers just want to put their films up on the internet - that doesn't take much time or money - but it will generally not result in a lot of views. You have to market and promote to get eyeballs.

Finally - I do provide some solutions to this new problem facing filmmakers (eg that there are not the number of distributors that used to exist with a LOT more product). New crew members, budgeting for distribution and marketing etc.

Thanks much!!

Hey Sheri,

I think the confusion on my end comes with that I heard Ted Hope talk about this via Twitter before I had read it in Jon's book. I agree with a lot of what Jon has to say in his book but my feeling is that some of the budgets and crew expections don't seem to fit within the bubble of some of the filmmakers that I speak to generally. I can certainly see the need for someone to help with things like social media and web development, as well as people to give you a hand on the festival circuit. But asking those people to commit to a year or more of marketing for no pay seems unlikely. However, on a shoot with a little larger budget I can see how a little stipend here and there would keep people loyal and working.

The chapter on digital rights is certainly worth checking out (the whole book is worth checking out really, even if some adaptation is needed to suit your film's needs). I look forward to what Jon will be doing online in the near future and hope to be able to steer other filmmakers his way to help him flesh out his online community!

Hey Nic,
Just to clarify a little of what you said, the 50/50 rule was always Jon's not Ted Hope's and it really involves time, not money. Of course, the more you are able to devote to marketing in resources, (financial, time and staff wise) the better your efforts will work.

But by starting early, filmmakers can do a lot of the process themselves if they are so inclined. It is my experience that waiting until post or until the film is finished is where most filmmakers make their fatal mistake. You are just too burned out and want to unload the film on someone else (your sales agent or distributor) and get it off your plate. So you end up taking whatever they give you, no matter how low. It doesn't have to be that way. Just have a team member who is solely devoted to marketing and distribution (the PMD highlighted in the book) so that it can be shepherded all along and won't become a burden to be dealt with at the end of production.

Another useful chapter of the book is devoted to digital rights and I think it is becoming imperative to understand this concept in the near future. Even I have had to read and reread this section. And it is changing everyday, so Jon will be making updates time progresses.

I have seen the movie and on a scale from 1 to 10, I would rate it 7.5. It is a good movie, but the story needs to be worked on or it could be the acting. I don't mean that the actors aren't good, but if you want to be number one, well, good isn't what I have in mind. _____________________________________________________________Escort Agencies in London

Your last 5 sentences sum up my experience exactly. As I've said elsewhere when talking about this movie, This movie was nothing that I expected and all I’ve ever wanted in a “scary” movie. I have never seen a "scary" movie that affected me like this.

Yes you did include the recipe! There was so much great info in that press kit I must have glossed over it! Thanks for being a shining example on how to correctly market your movie and further your brand! I look forward with talking with you more in the future!

Oh man, that is sooo nice of you. I really appreciate the feedback!! Did I include the recipe for Stag's Grove patchouli deodorant in that one, or were you spared of SMELLING like the THE COMMUNE?This press kit is our third iteration. It's a struggle to decipher what people want, be creative but not dorky, be confident but not pushy, AND do it as cheaply as possible so I don't have to sell more of my collection of original comic art. (Haha I'm already selling plasma, but NOOO not the 1970s Avengers pages by Byrne and Perez...!)Thank you for all the support, feedback, and press you provide for us struggling filmmakers. It's hard out here for us cinema slores. A pat on the back from a film hero such as yourself gets me through another long day of trying to get my baby to the audience who wants it and can't find it without you.
