31in31 – Day 31 “Hudson Hawk”

Info

summerlogo-300x168While this movie didn’t win an Oscar (in fact it actually won 3 Razzie awards, Worst Picture, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Director), this adult comedy starring Bruce Willis as the title character, 1991’s Hudson Hawk certainly stands out as a camp classic and the cherry on the top of the month long sundae that is Crackle.Com’s Summer Drive-In Series.

Hudson Hawk is a cat-burglar who is contracted to steal artifacts from the famous artist and inventor Leonardo DaVinci. If he succeeds in recovering all of the pieces, then the dreaded Mayflowers will be able to turn lead into gold and hold the world’s economy hostage. The plot itself is incredibly far-fetched as are many of the stunts and pranks that are played out through the course of the movie (case in point, Danny Aiello gets shot, and blown up and still shows up to save the day at the end of the movie). The amount of suspension of disbelief that is required for this flick is certainly more than many audiences are willing to give it. As a kid’s movie it would probably have done well, but unfortunately for the movie, it is littered with F-Bombs and innuendo that take any chance of a rating smaller than R almost impossible. How can we forget little gems like this?:

Tommy Five-Tone is miraculously alive at the end of the film]
Hudson Hawk: You’re supposed to be all cracked up at the bottom of the hill!
Tommy Five-Tone: Air bags! Can you fucking believe it?
Anna: You’re supposed to be blown up into fiery chunks of flesh!
Tommy Five-Tone: Sprinkler system set up in the back! Can you fucking BELIEVE it?

Michael Lehmann (“Heathers”) directed this movie as well as some classic 1990’s camp classics like “Airheads”, “The Truth About Cats & Dogs”, and “My Giant”. The screenplay was done by Bruce Willis himself as well as a couple other writers (we all know that Willis had final script approval on this film). The movie is shot pretty well, but really that’s about it. Other than a good laugh at a movie marathon party, “Hudson Hawk” is probably better watched for free online at Crackle.com where you can do so in the privacy of your own home.
