Thus begins the 2nd week of Crackle.Com’s Summer Drive-In Event! If you’ve been following along then you’ll have realized that all the movies last week fall under the Thriller category. This week we focus on Dramas and Action movies starting with the 1992 horror “Candyman”.
“Candyman” is a Clive Barker (Hellraiser) film that stars Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd in the title role. The Candyman tale is somewhat similiar to the Bloody Mary legend in that to supposedly summon him you have to call out to him five times in front of a mirror. The story of the Candyman is thoughtful and original however. Helen Lyle (Madsen) is investigating the urban legend of the Candyman, a one-armed man who was killed when he got the daughter of a powerful man pregnant. He had him mutilated, stung to death by bees and then burned. Helen doesn’t believe in the legend and summons the Candyman. That’s when the mayhem begins!
This movie is significant in that it is one of the few movies out there that features not only an African American “monster”, but also brings to the fore the stigma of interracial relationships. Most people might recognize Todd as the hero of the Tom Savini remake of Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” and it’s good to see him playing the other side of the coin this time. Todd’s Candyman character is memorable in that he is not only scary, but also very sympathetic as a villain.
