Today’s movie (brought to us all by Crackle.Com takes us back to 1998 with John McNaughton’s “Wild Things” starring Neve Campbell and Denise Richards. This movie was a big head trip when it came out (several years before Lynch’s masturbatory fantasy “Mulholland Dr.” which premiered in 2001) and doesn’t get any better with age, but certainly doesn’t get any worse. Watching this movie now is tough because once you’ve seen the plot twist, it’s kind of like watching an M. Night movie the 2nd time around. You see everything coming and are left not paying attention much to the story.
The story centers around a Florida high school counselor that is accused of rape by two conniving students. The police detective involved suspects that something is not quite right and decides to investigate further. What follows is a web of treachery, deceit, and trickery that was confusing, arousing, and at the same time frustrating.

Here’s an interesting piece of info that the good folks at Crackle found about this flick:
An interesting side note left out of the theatrical version here, but available on the unrated DVD version and also in the original screenplay is this exchange of dialogue -
GLORIA
So Suzie and Sandra Van Ryan were half-sisters.
RUBY
And the other girl, Kelly. Suzie’s niece.
That’s right. Not only was it originally a lesbian kiss, but an INCESTUOUS, aunt/niece, lesbian kiss. How’s that for a twist? It gives new depth to the film’s foreign title: Sex Crimes.
That really would have changed the dynamic and reception of the movie. I think it would have brought it closer to a “Cruel Intentions” type of film. This flick got very muddled in the middle and somewhat lost it’s way, concentrating instead on self-indulgent shots (I’m looking at you Miss Nekked Neve and Denise) not to mention a package shot of Kevin’s Bacon. Goes to show that you CAN somewhat redeem a movie with gratuitous nudity. But for those of us that focus on story, this flick failed miserably.
While this movie certainly was provocative, I don’t really see why the big deal is about this flick. I really wasn’t a huge fan of it when it came out, and I think that other films have done the suspense/thriller much better (again “Mulholland Dr.”, maybe even “Kiss the Girls”). I look forward to Day 2 of this month long event! Hopefully the next movie will provoke more of a response from me.
